How Course Reserve Works

Course reserve is a service through which faculty make textbooks, videos, lecture notes or other learning materials available for a limited time period. Students can search course reserve materials within the Library’s online catalog (librarians and staff are available to assists students). Course reserves are accessible by either the instructor’s name or the course title. Students must present a current Student ID card to use the course reserve materials.

How to Place Materials on Course Reserve

Instructors may place personal copies of instructional material on reserve for a given class. Instructors may print the Course Reserve form beforehand or ask for a copy at the circulation desk. The library circulation staff will process submitted materials in the order in which they are received. All materials, including personal copies, will have labels, barcodes and due date slips attached to them. Please allow 48 weekday hours for preparation of materials. In some cases, if the library owns a book in the permanent collection, we can place the book on reserve. Please check with the circulation staff for assistance.

Loan Periods

Materials are checked out to students for a period of time (loan period) selected by the instructor. Library staff recommends two hours, library use only, for high demand items. Other loan periods (including overnight) can be selected: see the Course Reserve form for additional loan period options.

Copyright Issues

Please note that responsibility for compliance with U.S. Copyright laws in regards to photocopied reserve materials rests with the instructor. Copies of periodical article or sections of books placed on Reserve need to meet the standards of the Copyright Guidelines. The library will place on reserve such copies, up to one copy for each ten students enrolled in the class.

Return of Course Reserve Materials

Instructors may ask for items to remain on reserve from one semester to the next. Items that have not been checked out for two years will be returned. Materials from the permanent collection will be returned to the permanent collection at the end of the semester.

Lost or Damaged Items

Students will be charged a fine for returning items late (up to $50). For lost or damaged items, students will be charged a replacement cost plus a $20 processing fee. Students will be blocked from registration until the fine/fee is paid. We will notify the instructor if an item is lost or damaged. Please note that the library is not responsible for personal copies and faculty will not be reimbursed for lost or damaged items.
