The Monterey County Registrar of Voters issues public notice of special election to be held on June 4, 2024.  Interested individuals should go to the County Elections Department webpage for filing instructions:

The Board adopted Resolution 24:4, Ordering An Election to Fill a Vacancy on the Hartnell CCD.

The District was notified by the County Superintendent of Schools that a "Petition for Special Election to Fill the Vacancy on the Governing Board of the Hartnell Community College District, Trustee Area 6 of Monterey County," was submitted to her office on Thursday, December 21, 2023. As Monterey County Superintendent of Schools, she reviewed the Petition and requested that the Monterey County Registrar of Voters verify the sufficiency of signatures as required by law, pursuant to Education Code section 5091.

The County Registrar of Voters notified her on Friday, January 19, 2024 that the Petition contains a sufficient number of valid signatures. As a result, it has been determined that the Petition is legally sufficient and that the Hartnell Community College District Trustee Area Six Provisional Appointee, Sonia Jaramillo, is to be terminated from her seat effective immediately, and that a special election is to be held to fill the vacancy.

Per Education Code 5092, notice is hereby given that a vacancy was created in District 6 of the Hartnell Community College District Governing Board by reason of the resignation of Trustee Erica Padilla-Chavez, who filed a letter with the Monterey County Board of Education on November 1, 2023 stating that she would resign her board position effective November 2, 2023.

In accordance with Education Code sec. 5091, the Board made a provisional appointment on November 21, 2023, naming Sonia Jaramillo to the vacancy.

Unless a petition calling for a special election, containing a sufficient number of signatures, is filed in the Office of the Monterey County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment, it shall become an effective appointment. Any such petitions must conform to the requirements listed in sec. 5091(f).
