The Salinas Valley Promise Peer Mentor is a one year paid position for the Office of Equity Programs. A peer mentor works with first year students and supports the mission of the Salinas Valley Promise Program. Peer Mentors are expected to work 1-5 hours per week during the 2023-2024 school year.

Through the Hartnell College Office of Equity Programs, The Salinas Valley Promise (SVP) program at Hartnell College offers two years of free in-state tuition and much more. Description:
The Salinas Valley Promise Peer Mentor role is a one academic year (2023-2024) paid position in the Office of Equity Programs. The SVP Peer Mentor upholds the mission of the Salinas Valley Promise, serves as a role model to students, helps first-year students acclimate to the campus, and provides academic guidance that will lead to student success.
Time Commitment: The Peer Mentor is expected to work 1-5 hours per week during the 2023-2024 academic year.
The position will begin at the start of the fall semester; August 28, 2023. .Peer mentors are required to go through a training/orientation - dates TBA.
Required Qualifications:

Be enrolled in at least 12 units

Be in good academic standing (2.0 GPA)

Have completed one academic year at Hartnell College
-
Availability to work up to 5 hours per week
Duties:
-
Participate in Peer Mentor training/orientation
-
Manage a caseload of 30-40 mentees
-
Reach out to mentees to assess their individual needs and help them with their questions or concerns
-
Build and sustain a sense of community among our first year experience program
-
Maintain regular and consistent communication with mentees
-
Provide mentees information about campus resources, services, and scholarships
-
Encourage mentees to participate in campus activities
-
Track interactions and communication with mentees through Mentor Collective
-
Work closely with Salinas Valley Promise Coordinator and Office of Equity Programs staff to better support mentees

Other duties may be assigned
Knowledge and Abilities:

Must be familiar with Hartnell College campus resources and services
-
Must demonstrate a strong work ethic and willingness to work the hours necessary to implement a successful first year experience for mentees

Must have experience working with diverse student populations

Must have the ability to multitask and prioritize projects

Using various communication platforms (email, text, phone, and video chat), must have excellent communication skills
